Guédiawaye FC recently made headlines by announcing the amicable termination of contracts with seven players, including Maurice Valentin Gomis. However, the former SONACOS member, reflecting on his abrupt departure, criticizes the club for what he perceives as a lack of respect for local football
Having joined Guédiawaye FC from SONACOS de Diourbel at the start of the season, Maurice Valentin Gomis was a consistent presence on the field, featuring in most of the team’s Ligue 1 matches.
Despite his contributions, Gomis found himself among the players released by the club, a decision he describes as unexpected and lacking clarity.
The Ziguinchor native, who often occupied the right side of the Crabs’ defense, expressed his confusion regarding the circumstances leading to his contract termination.
Gomis recounts being informed of the coach’s decision, which prompted him to gather his belongings and leave. However, he takes issue with the club’s use of the term “amicable termination” in their social media announcement.
“I cannot tell you the reasons for the termination of the contract with Guédiawaye FC. The news broke to me like everyone else. I was somewhere, and someone called me to tell me the coach has chosen the squad he wants to work with and that I am not part of it.
I took my luggage and left. But what I don’t find normal is the amicable expression; the word has no place on the posts that are shared on social networks.
We are talking about professional football, so we must respect the rules of professionalism,” declared Maurice Valentin Gomis.
Gomis further criticizes the actions of Guédiawaye FC, labeling them as a disregard for the principles of local football.
He emphasizes that while contract terminations are not uncommon, the manner in which it was executed by the club represents a first in his career and a departure from the expected professionalism in the evolving Senegalese league.
Following his departure from Guédiawaye FC, Gomis has found a new home at US Ouakam, coached by Moustapha Seck.
The other six players released by GFC include Abdoulie Baldeh, Saikou Cessay, Pa Ousman Senghor Soriba Sylla, Amdy Moustapha Diop, and Ibrahima Sène.
