Matthias Ginter extends Freiburg stay with new contract

Matthias Ginter has signed a new contract with SC Freiburg, committing his future to the Bundesliga club.

Freiburg announced the agreement on Tuesday, but have not revealed the length of the 32-year-old centre-back’s new deal.

Ginter returned to Freiburg in 2022 and has since become an important member of the team. Sporting director Jochen Saier said the defender’s experience and reliable performances continued to make him a central figure at the club.

“Matze is a key figure in our team,” Saier said. “The quality and consistency of his performances have been hugely impressive, and he’s played an important role in the team’s development.

“Even after so many years in professional football, Matze is still as driven and ambitious as ever. We’re delighted that he’ll be staying with us.”

Ginter came through Freiburg’s ranks and made his Bundesliga debut for the club in January 2012. He left for Borussia Dortmund in 2014, before moving to Borussia Monchengladbach three years later.

His return to Freiburg in 2022 reunited him with the club where he began his professional career. Ginter said his connection with Freiburg stretched back to his childhood and remained a source of pride.

“SC has been a huge part of my life since I was a kid, when I used to stand in the children’s section at the Dreisamstadion,” he said.

“The way the club has developed since then has been incredible. We want to keep building on what we’ve achieved together and continue pushing ourselves.”

Ginter has made 255 appearances for Freiburg, scoring 20 goals and supplying 19 assists.

He is set to continue that record when Freiburg host FC Schalke at the Europa-Park-Stadion on Sunday, 11 October.
