Matchday 6 showdown: Ivory Coast targets Group F summit against Gambia

Ivory Coast will host Gambia on Monday, March 24, at 19:00 GMT, as they seek to reclaim first place in Group F of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in the African zone.

The Elephants, fresh off their Africa Cup of Nations triumph, will be determined to secure all three points in front of their home supporters.

A victory would not only allow them to conclude this international window on a strong note but also propel them to the summit of their qualification group.

Currently sitting in second place with 13 points, Emerse Faé’s side trail Gabon, who lead the standings with 15 points after their victory over Kenya.

With a talented squad blending experienced internationals and emerging stars, Ivory Coast enters this encounter as the clear favorite.

However, Faé and his players must remain cautious against a Gambia side eager to cause an upset.

The increasing competitiveness of African football has made qualifying campaigns less predictable, and complacency could be costly in the race for a World Cup spot.

Gambia Seeks to Defy the Odds

Despite their underdog status, Gambia will not travel to Abidjan merely to make up the numbers. The Scorpions, currently fifth in the group with just four points from five matches, have little to lose and could pose a threat if Ivory Coast underestimates them.

In a qualification phase where surprises have been common, Gambia will be aiming to defy expectations and dent the Elephants’ ambitions.

Ivory Coast will need to be wary of any lapses in concentration. Their ability to control the game from the start and impose their attacking dominance will be crucial in ensuring they avoid any unnecessary complications.

Ivory Coast’s Dominance in Past Encounters

History favors the Ivorians in this fixture, as they have won all three previous meetings between the two nations.

The Elephants claimed comfortable victories in their past encounters, securing 3-0 wins in March and June of 2013 before earning a 2-0 triumph in their most recent clash in November 2024.

With their impressive record against Gambia and the advantage of playing at home, Ivory Coast will be expected to extend their dominance.

A win would take them to 16 points and move them ahead of Gabon at the top of the group, strengthening their bid for a place in the 2026 World Cup.

As the Elephants prepare for this pivotal fixture, their focus will be on maintaining their high standards and securing a crucial victory to keep their qualification hopes firmly on track.
