Matai Akinmboni: Dundee FC sign Bournemouth defender on season-long loan
United States-Nigeria defender Matai Akinmboni has joined Dundee FC from Bournemouth on loan, bringing the 19-year-old centre-back to the Scottish Premiership for the 2026-27 season.
Akinmboni’s move was completed on 27 August 2026, with the loan scheduled to run until 31 May 2027. He becomes a Dundee player after an 18-month spell with Bournemouth, who signed him from D.C. United in January 2025 for €1.5m.
The Maryland-born defender began his senior career with D.C. United after coming through the club’s academy. He also spent time on loan at Loudoun United during the 2023-24 season before returning to D.C. United in June 2024.
Akinmboni is a left-footed central defender who stands 1.88m tall. His arrival gives Dundee another option in the centre of defence as the club competes in the Scottish top flight.
He made the move to England after establishing himself in the United States, and joined Bournemouth with a market value of €1m. The loan represents his first recorded transfer away from the Premier League club since his arrival from D.C. United.
Dundee FC have now added Akinmboni to their squad on a temporary basis, with the defender due to return to Bournemouth at the end of the loan period.
