Senegal defender Massiré Sylla shines on full debut for Union Saint-Gilloise
Senegalese defender Massiré Sylla delivered a standout performance on his first start for Union Saint-Gilloise, earning the man-of-the-match award in a commanding 3-0 victory over KV Mechelen.
The 21-year-old centre-back played the full 90 minutes at the Stade Joseph Marien in the Belgian league playoffs and played a key role in securing a clean sheet for his side.
His defensive discipline and strength in duels were central to Union Saint-Gilloise’s dominant display.
The result strengthened Union Saint-Gilloise’s position in the title race, with the club currently sitting second in the standings on 49 points, just one point behind leaders Club Brugge, who remain top with 50 points.
With three matches remaining, the championship race remains finely balanced.
Sylla joined the Belgian club in March from Norwegian side Lyn 1896 FK, signing a long-term contract running until 2030. His arrival was viewed as a significant investment in the club’s defensive future.
Before moving to Belgium, Sylla had already attracted attention in Norway’s OBOS-ligaen, where he was recognised for his performances and named the best young player in the league.
His development in Scandinavia helped establish his reputation as one of Senegal’s emerging defensive talents.
The move to Union Saint-Gilloise represents a step up in competition, and his immediate impact in a high-pressure playoff match has further strengthened his growing reputation.
Club staff and supporters will be encouraged by his composed display, particularly given the importance of the fixture in the closing stages of the season.
With the title race still open, Sylla’s ability to maintain consistency could prove valuable as Union Saint-Gilloise continue their pursuit of the league leaders in a tightly contested campaign.
After his first start for Union, Massiré Sylla was crowned Man of the Match and delivered an emotional speech in the dressing room. 💛💙 pic.twitter.com/xwbFjjqXYZ
