Martin O’Neill confirms Celtic have offered Kelechi Iheanacho a new contract
Celtic manager Martin O’Neill has confirmed that the club have presented Kelechi Iheanacho with a new contract offer as they attempt to retain the Nigeria international beyond his initial deal.
The 29-year-old forward is currently considering Celtic’s proposal, with the Scottish giants waiting for his response as interest from other clubs reportedly remains a factor in his decision.
Speaking during Celtic’s pre-season training camp in Portugal, O’Neill revealed that the club have made their intentions clear but admitted the final decision rests with Iheanacho.
“There’s an offer there to him (Iheanacho) at this minute. So we’ll see how that develops,” he told reporters.
Celtic seek continuity after one-season stay
Iheanacho arrived at Celtic last summer on a one-year contract, which included an option for an additional season. However, that clause expired in June, leaving both parties needing to negotiate fresh terms.
The former Manchester City and Leicester City striker became an important attacking option for the Hoops during his debut campaign, prompting the club to explore extending his stay.
Celtic’s latest move underlines their desire to keep experience within their squad as they prepare for another demanding season.
While the club have tabled an offer, Iheanacho is yet to commit his future, with his next step expected to depend on whether he accepts Celtic’s terms or pursues opportunities elsewhere.
