The President of Olympique de Marseille, Pablo Longoria, has revealed why the club did not sign free agent Paul Pogba in the winter transfer window.
The France midfielder of Guinean descent was heavily linked with a move to the French Ligue 1 club, but no deal happened at the end of the transfer window.
According to Pablo Longoria, Olympique de Marseille passed the opportunity to sign the World Cup winner to preserve the balance in the team’s squad.
Speaking to Spanish radio station Cadena SER, Pablo Longoria said the club also felt it would be counterproductive at the time.
“We had conversations and we had this opportunity because the player had come onto the market. However, we decided not to do it this season because we thought that his recovery time could upset the balance of the squad. And that would raise expectations. We felt that it would be counterproductive,” he noted.
Paul Pogba, 32, is eager to return to the field after serving his doping ban. He has been training hard and aims to land a deal with a club when the summer transfer window comes around.
