Vincent Labrune Defends Souleymane Diawara’s Jersey Retirement Amid Criticism
Vincent Labrun e, president of Olympique de Marseille, has defended his controversial decision to retire the number 21 jersey worn by Souleymane Diawara, despite ongoing criticism. The move has sparked debate among fans and former players, but Labrune remains steadfast in his reasoning.
In an interview with La Provence, Labrune explained that Diawara’s contributions to the club were integral to one of the most successful periods in Marseille’s history. “His arrival at the club corresponds to the championship title, the six trophies won, the quarter-final of the Champions League. He is the symbol of the best period of the Louis-Dreyfus years,” Labrune said. “The fact that he is at the end of his contract gave me the opportunity to retire his number. I accept this choice, I find it normal and legitimate.”
While some former players have voiced their discontent with the decision, Labrune acknowledged the differing opinions, suggesting that had he been president during their time, he might have made similar decisions regarding their jerseys. “If I had been president in their time, I might have taken off their jerseys,” he admitted.
Despite the backlash, the decision has found support from former Marseille player Basile Boli, who welcomed the tribute to Diawara. As the debate continues, Labrune’s firm stance on the matter highlights his commitment to honoring Diawara’s legacy at the club.
