Marcel Koller has stirred debate with a bold squad selection for Al Ahly’s CAF Champions League semi-final clash against Mamelodi Sundowns, leaving veteran defender Ali Maaloul behind.
The Tunisian full-back was reportedly furious after learning he wouldn’t be part of the traveling team to South Africa on Tuesday evening.
A club insider revealed to Kooora that Maaloul felt snubbed, especially with key defenders Yahya Atiyatallah and Karim Dabis ruled out due to injury, and Karim Fouad still not fully fit.
“Maaloul was hoping to at least make the roster for this game, regardless of whether or not he participates, which is in the hands of head coach Marcel Koller,” the insider said.
Al Ahly, who advanced to the semi-final by eliminating Sudan’s Al Hilal, flew out to Pretoria on a private jet ahead of the Saturday, April 19 match.
Sundowns, who knocked out Tunisia’s Esperance in the quarterfinals, will welcome the reigning champions for a heated first-leg showdown.
Koller’s decision, though strategic, may test dressing room harmony at a crucial stage in the campaign.
