Marcel Desailly urges Chelsea to Mohamed Salah

Former Chelsea defender Marcel Desailly has called on the club to make a bold move to re-sign Mohamed Salah on a free transfer this summer following his exit from Liverpool.

Salah, one of the Premier League’s most prolific attackers of the modern era, will leave the Reds at the of the season bringing his nine-year spell at Anfield to an end, with several top clubs across Europe and beyond monitoring his situation closely.

His name has also been repeatedly linked with a potential move to Saudi Arabia in recent years, adding further uncertainty to his next destination.

Speaking in an interview with Football Transfers, Desailly backed a sensational Stamford Bridge return for the Egyptian superstar.

For Desailly, a return to London could appeal to the 32-year-old for both personal and professional reasons, despite his earlier difficult spell at Chelsea between 2014 and 2016.

“As you know, he has played in London before and it didn’t work out. Perhaps Salah wants to join a club in London for his family and to improve his standard of living,” Desailly explained. “It’s not that Liverpool is an unbearable city, but London might be a better option for them. I think he is an experienced player who can bring a special touch to the team.”

Salah’s first spell at Chelsea saw him struggle for consistent game time, making just 19 appearances over two and a half seasons before being sold to Roma for €15 million following an impressive loan spell in Italy.

Since then, the Egyptian forward has transformed into one of world football’s elite attackers. After joining Liverpool in 2017 for €42 million, Salah has gone on to become a club legend, scoring 257 goals in 442 appearances and winning multiple major honours.

His potential availability on a free transfer would represent one of the most high-profile opportunities of the summer window, with clubs across Europe weighing up whether to make a move for the forward despite his age and wage demands.

Chelsea, meanwhile, remain in a long-term rebuilding phase and are expected to be active in the transfer market, although a move for a former star like Salah would mark one of the most dramatic decisions of their modern era.

For now, Salah’s future remains unresolved, but Desailly’s comments have reignited speculation over a possible return to Stamford Bridge more than a decade after his first departure.
