Chancel Mbemba, the Olympique de Marseille defender, expressed his elation upon winning the Marc-Vivien Foé Prize, which recognizes the best African player in Ligue 1. Speaking with gratitude, Mbemba conveyed his pride and appreciation to all those who voted for him.
“Firstly, I feel immense pride. I extend my heartfelt thanks to all who supported me and contributed to this achievement. It’s truly an honor to be on the list, considering the abundance of African talent in Ligue 1. I never anticipated winning, so to receive this recognition is truly humbling. As a Congolese, it brings me great joy. In my debut season in France, I dedicated myself to hard work, given the level of talent in Ligue 1. I am grateful to God for this victory,” Mbemba expressed in an interview with Rfi and France 24, the promoters of the Prize.
Securing this accolade in his inaugural season in Ligue 1, Mbemba acknowledged setting this achievement as a personal goal, drawing inspiration from his compatriot and national team teammate, Gaël Kakuta.
“Winning this trophy was a goal I set for myself. Previously, Fofana and Kakuta, fellow Congolese, earned this distinction. Upon arriving in France, I aspired to emulate their success, leaving no stone unturned in showcasing my abilities to leave a mark. They served as exemplary figures for me, particularly Gaël Kakuta, with whom I share a strong bond. We continue to represent our nation together in the national team. He was a role model for me when I arrived in France,” Mbemba remarked.
Notably, Mbemba garnered 207 points in the voting, securing the top spot, followed by Seko Fofana with 196 points and Terem Moffi with 125 points, who secured the third position.
