Former French international Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa, after a hiatus of over three years since hanging up his boots, has made a triumphant return to the football pitch. The seasoned defender, boasting four international caps, showcased his enduring passion for the game as he debuted with Istres FC over the weekend. The 34-year-old officially rekindled his footballing career after bidding adieu to professional play in 2020 upon the conclusion of his contract with Lyon.
Yanga-Mbiwa’s re-entry into the footballing arena saw him don the colors of Istres FC, a club currently leading the way in Group A of National 3.
In his comeback match, which culminated in a 2-0 victory against Gallia Lucciana in Corsica, the 2012 French champion with Montpellier expressed his enthusiasm for contributing to the team’s success.
“I will bring my experience and pass it on to young people,” stated Yanga-Mbiwa in an interview with Maritima, underscoring his commitment to mentorship within the squad.
Having accumulated a wealth of experience through 176 appearances in Ligue 1, the French central defender aims to lend his seasoned perspective to Istres FC.
Following his departure from Lyon in 2020, Yanga-Mbiwa enjoyed a period of rest while relishing moments with loved ones.
His return to competitive football with Istres FC marks a dynamic reunion with football, with Yohan Mollo, a former teammate from AS Roma and Newcastle, accompanying him at the club since last summer.
The presence of two football veterans, one with Stéphanois and the other with Lyonnais roots, in the Istres FC lineup fosters an environment that kindles aspirations of a potential return to the professional footballing arena.
The journey ahead for Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa and Istres FC holds promises of both mentorship and a pursuit of renewed sporting ambitions.
