Mangala: “Premier League Requires More Than Physicality”
French international Eliaquim Mangala has opened up about his early experiences in the Premier League following his high-profile move to Manchester City last summer. Signed from FC Porto for a reported €54 million, the defender of Congolese origin shared insights on the differences he’s encountered since arriving in England.
Speaking to L’Équipe, Mangala admitted that adapting to the English top flight has been a challenge, but also an enjoyable one.
“It’s a league that’s really different from any I’ve experienced so far,” said the former Standard Liège and Porto player. “In the Premier League, attackers are just as strong physically as defenders. So, you can’t rely solely on your physical attributes to impose yourself.”
Mangala pointed out that referees in England tend to allow more contact during play, meaning defenders must adapt quickly. “You have to be more proactive, use your arms, be more aggressive and smarter in your approach,” he explained. “There’s definitely an adaptation period, and I’m enjoying it.”
Despite a few shaky performances early in his City tenure, Mangala has shown glimpses of the strength and composure that made him one of the most sought-after centre-backs in Europe. His comments suggest a player willing to learn and grow in what is widely considered the most demanding league in the world.
Manchester City, managed by Manuel Pellegrini, brought in Mangala as part of their strategy to solidify their defence and build a team capable of challenging both domestically and in Europe.
Mangala’s frank reflections offer a window into the often underappreciated learning curve international players face when adjusting to the pace and physical demands of English football. And while he’s still finding his footing, the Frenchman remains confident in his ability to adapt and thrive in the Premier League.
