Manchester United’s André Onana faces uncertain future amid club’s goalkeeping search

André Onana backs Cameroon as contenders for 2025 AFCON

Manchester United’s Cameroonian goalkeeper André Onana is facing mounting uncertainty over his future at the club, with reports suggesting the Red Devils are already seeking a replacement ahead of the summer transfer window.

Onana, who joined United from Inter Milan in 2023 to succeed David De Gea, has endured a challenging second season marked by inconsistent performances.

Despite showcasing his shot-stopping ability on occasions, the 27-year-old has been criticised for costly mistakes that have raised questions about his long-term suitability as the club’s number one goalkeeper.

Initially heralded as a modern goalkeeper capable of enhancing United’s build-up play, Onana’s displays have divided opinion among fans and pundits alike.

His €50 million transfer fee has further heightened scrutiny, with many feeling the investment has yet to be fully justified.

According to reports from Italian outlet MilanLive, Manchester United are already exploring options to bolster their goalkeeping department.

AC Milan’s French international Mike Maignan has emerged as a leading candidate, with the 29-year-old seen as a more reliable option due to his experience and ability to deliver in high-pressure situations.

Maignan, who played a pivotal role in Milan’s Serie A triumph in 2022, is highly regarded across Europe despite facing some challenges this season with the Rossoneri.

His leadership qualities and composure have reportedly caught the attention of United’s decision-makers as they plan for the future.

With speculation intensifying, Onana will be keen to prove his worth in the remaining matches of the season as he fights to retain his place in the squad.

However, the club’s pursuit of a new goalkeeper signals that a significant reshuffle in the goalkeeping department could be on the horizon.
