Manchester United target signing Senegal midfielder Pape Gueye as Casemiro’s successor
Manchester United are weighing up a move for Senegal international Pape Gueye as they prepare for life after Casemiro.
The Brazilian midfielder is expected to depart Old Trafford at the end of the season when his contract runs out, prompting the club to reassess its options in the centre of the park.
Midfield reinforcement is already high on the agenda, particularly with uncertainty surrounding the future of Manuel Ugarte, who has reportedly attracted interest from elsewhere.
According to reports, United have identified Gueye, currently on the books of Villarreal CF, as a viable successor.
The 25-year-old has emerged as one of the more affordable options on the club’s shortlist, despite being under contract with the La Liga outfit until 2028.
Villarreal manager Marcelino Garcia Toral admits he cannot guarantee the midfielder’s future, though he would be surprised to see him depart imminently.
“He is an important player. And his absence was cruelly felt during Afcon. His impact, his game, his qualities…
“Personally, I would be very surprised if he left during this transfer window.
“But it is a decision that concerns him and the club. It’s not up to the coach to decide, because he doesn’t make that kind of decision.”
Gueye has featured 20 times in all competitions this season, scoring four goals, and continues to enhance his reputation as one of Senegal’s most reliable midfield options.
