Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has revealed the reason behind Andre Onana’s absence from their game against Arsenal.

The Cameroonian shot stopper was not in action as Manchester United succumbed to a 1-0 home defeat to the Gunners in the Premier League opener, held at the Old Trafford.

Italy international Riccardo Calafiori emerged as the hero of the match after scoring the only goal to secure maximum points for the Gunners.

The 23-year-old broke the deadlock after just 13 minutes into the game. However, with no additional goal, the visitors crusied to victory.

Explaining Onana’s absence, Amorim asserted he was excluded from the match due to a technical decision, noting that player selection is based on performances during the preseason and the balance between the starting lineup and the team’s strength at the end of matches.

Per Amorim, Onana was not injured, but he preferred to rely on other players who performed well during the preseason.

“It’s a choice. We try to pick the best players for each match. Next week is completely different, and this week we picked those players. I didn’t drop Onana, I put two players ahead of him. I am happy with our three goalkeepers”. he said.

Having suffered defeat in Premier League, Amorim and his charges will be hoping to bounce back in their next fixture, with Onana expected to make a return to the squad.
