Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has come to the defense of goalkeeper Andre Onana following the team’s 2-0 loss to Wolverhampton Wanderers on Thursday evening.
Some fans have criticized the defeat, blaming Onana for Matheus Nunes’s first goal.
Addressing the issue in a post-match interview with Amazon, Amorim expressed his support for the goalkeeper while highlighting the challenges faced by the team during the game.
“Yes, against Tottenham. It’s the same. Onana cannot go to the ball, I think,” Amorim said. “He’s trying to reach the ball, and some guys are not even looking at the ball, but I don’t want to focus on that. I think the good thing is we were near the goal, even with 10 men. That is a good thing, but we lost.”
The manager acknowledged the difficulty of playing with a man down after a red card and emphasized the team’s effort to recover during the match.
“Of course, when you lose, when we don’t win, it’s a step back. It was really hard with the sending off. The goal was similar against Tottenham. Then, we tried. Even with one less guy, we tried and I think we were near something, but then Wolves scored the second one. In the end, we tried everything, and the transition was 2-0. For us, let’s continue,” Amorim added.
The loss has left Manchester United in 14th place in the Premier League standings, only eight points above the relegation zone.
As the team looks to bounce back, Amorim’s remarks underline the need to focus on future matches and maintain resilience despite recent setbacks.
