Manchester United are reportedly expressing strong interest in Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta, who has been in exceptional form this season.
Mateta, of DR Congo descent, has been a standout performer for the Eagles, attracting attention from top clubs.
According to reports, United’s scouts were present at Selhurst Park during Palace’s recent FA Cup tie against Millwall to observe Mateta.
However, an early collision with Millwall goalkeeper Liam Roberts resulted in a severe laceration to Mateta’s left ear, requiring 25 stitches. Despite this injury, Mateta has been discharged from the hospital and is recuperating well.
This season, Mateta has scored 15 goals in 33 games, including six in his last five Premier League appearances.
His performance has been instrumental in Palace’s campaign, making him a valuable asset for the team.
However, some insiders suggest that Manchester United may prioritize other targets.
Former United chief scout Mick Brown commented on the club’s striker search, stating that while Mateta has excelled at Crystal Palace, there might be a gap when considering the expectations at Old Trafford.
Brown mentioned that United’s list includes high-profile names like Harry Kane and Viktor Gyokeres, indicating that Mateta might not be at the top of their shortlist.
