Manchester United have completed a major step in their pursuit of Bryan Mbeumo, with the Cameroonian international successfully passing his medical ahead of a high-profile transfer from Brentford.
The 25-year-old forward, who delivered a standout campaign in the Premier League last season, is set to sign a long-term contract at Old Trafford. The deal, worth €82 million including bonuses, is expected to be made official before United depart for their pre-season tour in the United States.
Under the terms of the agreement, Manchester United will pay an initial fee of €76 million, with a further €6 million to follow in performance-related add-ons. The transfer fee will be spread over four instalments.
Despite interest from other top-flight clubs, including Tottenham Hotspur—where his former manager Thomas Frank now works—Mbeumo was clear about his preference to join United, viewing the move as a step up in his career.
The Cameroonian’s performances last season caught widespread attention. He scored 20 goals and provided seven assists in the Premier League, underlining his effectiveness in the final third and his ability to influence matches at the highest level. His versatility and consistency made him one of Brentford’s standout performers and earned him a spot on the radar of some of Europe’s top clubs.
Manchester United had initially seen two bids rejected before eventually reaching an agreement with Brentford. The initial offers—one of €55 million with €7.5 million in bonuses and a second of €62.5 million—were turned down before the revised and final figure was accepted. The total package marks a record sale for Brentford and a substantial return on the player they signed for under €6 million in 2019.
Mbeumo will become the latest addition in a summer of significant investment at Old Trafford. He is expected to feature prominently in the plans of head coach Rúben Amorim, who reportedly sees him as an ideal fit for one of the attacking midfield roles in his preferred 3-4-3 system.
The winger’s arrival adds to United’s push for a refreshed attacking line, following the arrivals of Matheus Cunha and Diego León earlier in the window. The club has also made several players available for transfer in a bid to streamline the squad, with names such as Jadon Sancho, Antony, and Marcus Rashford reportedly among those who could depart.
For Brentford, Mbeumo’s departure marks the end of an era. Over five seasons, he made more than 240 appearances and established himself as a key figure in the club’s rise through the English football pyramid. His departure, while a loss for the Bees, represents one of the most profitable deals in their history.
Mbeumo is now expected to join his new teammates for the club’s pre-season tour, where he will begin preparations for the upcoming campaign in the red of Manchester United.
