Manchester United defender Patrick Dorgu is returning from international duty with an injury, while captain Bruno Fernandes has stayed with Portugal despite a fitness concern.
Dorgu was forced off after 30 minutes of Denmark’s 2-0 Nations League win over Wales on Sunday. The 21-year-old received treatment before being substituted, with the problem understood to involve his thigh or hamstring.
Denmark have confirmed that Dorgu will leave their squad and return to Manchester. Head coach Brian Riemer said the defender would not be available for the rest of the international fixtures.
United will conduct further examinations at Carrington to establish the extent of Dorgu’s injury. The timing will concern the club, with Tottenham due to visit Old Trafford on October 10.
Dorgu has made six appearances for United this season, starting three matches and providing two assists. His injury is another setback for Denmark, who have also lost Andreas Christensen, Alexander Bah, Albert Gronbaek and Kasper Dolberg.
Fernandes’ position is less clear. The United captain was not involved in Portugal’s Nations League victory over Norway on Sunday after being left out as a precaution.
Portugal manager Jorge Jesus has indicated that Fernandes remains with the squad and could play against Denmark on Thursday.
The midfielder has reportedly been managing an injury since United’s Champions League victory over Sabah FK on September 10. He passed late fitness tests before the club’s Premier League matches against Manchester City and Fulham, completing 90 minutes in both games.
Fernandes also played the final 20 minutes of United’s Carabao Cup defeat by Brighton.
The Portugal international has been a key contributor for United this season, scoring four goals and providing one assist. His goals include a Premier League hat-trick against Ipswich Town.
United have also completed the signing of 16-year-old Isaac Konde from rivals Liverpool. The teenager played under-18 football for Liverpool last season before moving to Old Trafford.
