Manchester City have opened negotiations with Olympique Lyonnais regarding a potential loan move for Issa Kaboré, following the player’s underwhelming season with Werder Bremen.
The 23-year-old Burkinabe right-back made only 16 appearances during his loan spell in the Bundesliga and is now back with City, where he faces an uncertain future.
With limited first-team opportunities under Pep Guardiola and no clear role in the squad for the upcoming campaign, City are once again seeking a temporary solution to ensure his continued development.
According to sources familiar with the situation, discussions between the two clubs have gained momentum in recent days.
The relationship between City and Lyon has grown stronger since the recent transfer of Rayan Cherki to the English champions, and City are looking to build on that foundation by offering Kaboré to the French side.
“A loan to Lyon is being explored as a serious option,” said a source close to the negotiations. “The player and his representatives are keen to put his difficult time in Germany behind him and believe Ligue 1 could provide the right environment for a fresh start.”
Kaboré’s entourage is reportedly enthusiastic about the potential move to Lyon, viewing it as an opportunity to revitalise a career that once showed considerable promise.
His attacking style and high energy levels have previously impressed during loan spells with Troyes and Marseille in France, making a return to Ligue 1 an attractive prospect.
Though Manchester City are not pushing for a permanent transfer at this stage, the structure of the proposed loan deal has not yet been finalised.
Both parties are expected to continue talks in the coming days to reach an agreement that suits all sides.
Kaboré is currently valued at €4 million by Transfermarkt and earned a salary of €1.25 million during his time at Werder Bremen.
A move to Lyon would allow the full-back to re-establish himself in a competitive environment while keeping his long-term future open.
As the summer transfer window unfolds, Kaboré joins a list of Burkinabe internationals whose movements are closely watched by fans eager to see them flourish on the European stage.
For now, all eyes will be on how swiftly talks between Manchester City and Lyon progress.
