Manchester United have made initial contact with Chelsea to explore a possible move for French-Congolese attacker Christopher Nkunku, according to fresh reports on ongoing transfer discussions between the two Premier League sides.
Nkunku, who is of Congolese heritage and represents France at international level, has emerged as a subject of interest for United as the club reshapes its attacking options ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.
The 27-year-old forward endured an injury-hit debut season at Stamford Bridge but remains highly rated for his versatility and goal-scoring ability.
United and Chelsea have maintained dialogue in recent weeks, initially centred around Jadon Sancho’s return to Old Trafford following his loan spell in Germany.
However, sources at The Athletic say those discussions have since expanded to include Nkunku, with United making inquiries about his availability and Chelsea’s valuation.
At the same time, Chelsea are believed to have asked about the potential availability of Alejandro Garnacho.
The Argentine winger, who has been placed on the transfer list by United, is reportedly of interest to the West London club.
A straight swap deal has not been formally proposed, but both clubs are said to be open to creative solutions that would suit their summer strategies.
Nkunku, who joined Chelsea from RB Leipzig in 2023, has four years remaining on his current deal.
The French-born forward is viewed by United as a player who could add both flair and depth to their front line, especially amid uncertainty over Sancho’s long-term future and Antony’s inconsistent form.
Negotiations are still in exploratory stages, with no firm offer yet submitted.
However, the discussions reflect a growing trend among elite Premier League clubs to consider player exchanges as a tool to manage Financial Fair Play restrictions while reinforcing their squads.
