Manchester United is reportedly eyeing Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta as an alternative option should their pursuit of Ipswich Town’s Liam Delap fail this summer.
Mateta, who has made a significant impact for Palace this season with 17 goals and 4 assists, is being considered by United if their primary target, Delap, does not materialize.
The French forward, of Congolese descent, has proven himself in the Premier League and could provide much-needed attacking depth to United’s squad.
However, Mateta will only be pursued if Delap’s potential move to Old Trafford falls through in the coming months.
United’s manager, Ruben Amorim, is expected to oversee a substantial squad overhaul during the summer transfer window, with rumors suggesting that up to ten players could leave.
The club has been grappling with a lack of consistent goals from strikers like Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee, further emphasizing the need to bolster their forward line.
Mateta’s potential arrival could coincide with that of Wolves forward Matheus Cunha, who has also been linked with a move to Manchester United in recent weeks.
With both players possibly joining the club, United’s attack could see a significant upgrade. However, their focus remains on Delap, whose £30M relegation release clause makes him an appealing target.
Nonetheless, United faces stiff competition to secure Delap’s signature, and the outcome of their pursuit will determine whether Mateta becomes a viable option.
