Man United questioned over Victor Osimhen snub as AFCON excuse challenged

Former Nigeria international Ogenyi Onazi has criticised Manchester United for what he believes was a costly hesitation in their pursuit of Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen, arguing the Premier League side allowed a major opportunity to slip away.

United were heavily linked with the prolific forward, currently starring for Galatasaray, but reports suggested concerns over his expected involvement in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations influenced the club’s decision to step back from negotiations.

The development has since sparked debate over recruitment priorities at Old Trafford, particularly as the club continues its search for a reliable long-term goalscorer.

Onazi, speaking to Footy-Africa, dismissed the reasoning behind the reported withdrawal, insisting elite clubs must plan around international tournaments rather than avoid players because of them.

The former midfielder maintained that Osimhen’s quality and proven scoring pedigree should have outweighed any temporary absence during AFCON.

“Well, for me, I don’t think that’s an excuse for them not to sign Victor,” Onazi said.

“If they know the importance and what he could be able to bring to the table for Manchester United, that shouldn’t be an excuse because there are other players who go to the African Nations Cup in Manchester United and other clubs too as well, that are very important like Mo Salah in Liverpool.”

Osimhen’s reputation as one of Europe’s most decisive forwards was forged during his title-winning spell with Napoli, and his continued output has only reinforced his standing among the continent’s elite strikers.
