Manchester United have reportedly initiated the process of securing Spanish goalkeeper Joan García, amid growing uncertainty surrounding the future of current number one André Onana.
According to reports published Friday evening, the Premier League side is closely monitoring García’s availability as Saudi clubs continue to express interest in signing the Cameroonian goalkeeper.
Despite his public commitment to stay and compete for his spot, Onana’s season has been marred by high-profile mistakes, casting doubt on his long-term position under new manager Rúben Amorim.
The club’s leadership is said to be exploring alternatives, with García emerging as a leading candidate.
As reported by The Sun, citing Spanish sources, Manchester United are believed to be nearing an agreement with García.
The club has made an early move to convince the 23-year-old to join them, although an official offer is yet to be submitted.
García, who currently plays for Espanyol, has a release clause of £21 million, which could increase to £25 million as the summer transfer window progresses.
His value could rise by an additional £4.25 million should he earn his first senior cap for Spain.
The young shot-stopper is widely seen as one of Spain’s most promising goalkeeping prospects.
He played a key role in the national team’s gold-medal triumph at the Paris Olympics and was pivotal in Espanyol’s promotion back to the top flight.
His performances earned him the club’s Player of the Season award.
This season, García has maintained his high standards, keeping seven clean sheets in 32 league appearances.
His standout displays include being named Man of the Match in a stunning 1-0 victory over Real Madrid and claiming two Save of the Month awards in La Liga.
In addition to Manchester United, clubs such as Arsenal and Real Madrid are also monitoring García’s progress.
