Man City beat Arsenal to English-Zambian wonderkid Jeremy Monga
Manchester City have stolen a march on Premier League rivals Arsenal after reaching an agreement to sign Leicester City’s teenage star Jeremy Monga in a deal worth around £10 million.
The highly rated winger had been heavily linked with a move to the Emirates, with Arsenal holding club-to-club discussions with Leicester as they looked to secure one of England’s brightest young prospects.
However, City have now moved decisively to hijack the transfer, leaving the Gunners empty-handed.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed the breakthrough, revealing that Pep Guardiola’s side had successfully convinced both Leicester and the player’s representatives after lengthy negotiations.
“Jeremy Monga to Manchester City, here we go! Deal in place with Leicester City and player side.
“Fee worth £10m package as #MCFC got deal done after long talks with Arsenal but no breakthrough.
“Maresca, involved in process to sign Monga by presenting long term project.”
One of England’s brightest prospects
Monga is regarded as one of the country’s most exciting emerging talents despite being only days away from his 17th birthday.
The winger etched his name into Premier League history when he made his senior debut for Leicester at just 15 years old during a defeat to Newcastle United. That appearance made him the third-youngest player ever to feature in the competition, behind Arsenal duo Max Dowman and Ethan Nwaneri.
His rapid development has attracted widespread interest from England’s elite clubs, with Arsenal pushing hard to bring him to north London before City entered the race.
The move continues Manchester City’s aggressive recruitment of elite academy talent as the club looks to strengthen its long-term pipeline with some of the country’s most promising youngsters.
Leicester forced into difficult decision
Leicester’s relegation to League One has accelerated the club’s need to generate transfer income ahead of the new season, making the sale of prized assets increasingly likely.
Monga remains on scholarship terms and is set to sign his first professional contract on July 10 when he turns 17. That deadline has added urgency to negotiations, with City keen to complete the transfer before the deal becomes more complicated under professional contract regulations.
For Arsenal, missing out represents a significant setback after weeks of discussions, while City appear set to secure another elite teenage prospect before he fully breaks onto the Premier League stage.
