A suspect has been formally charged in connection with the robbery of Manchester United goalkeeper André Onana’s wife, Melanie Kamayou, which occurred outside a popular restaurant in Cheshire late last month.
The incident took place on the evening of March 29 outside San Carlo restaurant on Wilmslow Road in Alderley Edge.
According to Cheshire Police, Kamayou, 35, was approached and robbed around 10 p.m., prompting officers to respond swiftly to reports of a street robbery involving a woman.
Among the items reported stolen were a high-value gold Rolex watch and a designer Hermès Birkin handbag.
The suspect, identified as Liam Ross, has been charged with one count of robbery and an additional count relating to the supply of Class B drugs.
He made his first court appearance on Friday at Chester Magistrates’ Court, where he was remanded into custody. Ross is expected to remain in custody until his next court hearing.
Reports from the Manchester Evening News indicate that the robbery involved luxury items believed to be valued in the tens of thousands of pounds, heightening public interest in the case.
While the motive behind the robbery has not been disclosed, the involvement of high-end goods suggests a targeted attack.
The off-field incident comes amid a challenging season for Onana, who has been under scrutiny for inconsistent performances since joining Manchester United.
The emotional toll of the robbery on his family may have impacted his mindset, although he delivered a notable performance with a clean sheet in United’s recent match against Manchester City.
Cheshire Police say investigations into the case are ongoing, with further proceedings expected in the coming weeks.
