Mamelodi Sundowns star Iqraam Rayners unfazed by South Africa snub despite top form
Mamelodi Sundowns star Iqraam Rayners is unfazed by his exclusion from the South Africa team despite being on top form.
Despite calls for his return into the team, Rayners was overlooked for the March international break, sparking numerous concerns in South Africa.
But the enterprising attacker has brushed aside growing calls for inclusion in the team, insisting he remains fully focused on club duties. Rayners, however, appears completely unbothered by the omission.
“For me, it was a good four days off because we had to spend time with our families,” he said.
The 28-year-old has been one of the standout performers in the PSL this season, currently sitting as the second-highest goalscorer with 10 goals, just behind Junior Dion of Golden Arrows, who leads the chart with 12.
Despite his impressive form, Rayners remains grounded, emphasizing team focus over individual recognition.
“When we arrived back, it was a good opportunity for us to be back together and focus on our game on Friday evening,” he added. “The preparations are going on well… it’s all about focusing on the next game and doing our best.”
Attention now turns to a crucial Betway Premiership clash as Sundowns prepare to face Chippa United at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium. With the title race heating up, every point is vital—especially as Sundowns look to overtake Orlando Pirates, who currently sit just one point ahead.
Rayners is under no illusion about the challenge ahead, particularly against teams fighting for survival.
“It’s always going to be a difficult one because teams at the bottom… are fighting for their jobs, fighting for their lives, and fighting for their families,” he explained.
“So, it is not going to be an easy game, but for us, it’s about keeping the momentum and winning games. We take it one game at a time; that’s the most important thing.”
While questions about his international future continue to swirl, Rayners’ focus remains clear—deliver for Sundowns, maintain momentum, and let his performances do the talking.
