Sundowns strengthens lead

Mamelodi Sundowns delivered a breathtaking attacking masterclass to overpower Siwelele 7-4 in a historic Betway Premiership clash on Saturday night, rewriting the record books in a match that will be remembered as one of the most chaotic in South African top-flight history.

The 11-goal spectacle marked the highest-scoring game since the formation of the Premier Soccer League in 1996/97, with both sides contributing to a contest defined by relentless attacking and defensive frailty.

Remarkably, the fixture also produced two hat-tricks, an unprecedented occurrence in PSL history.

Sundowns wasted no time asserting dominance. Teboho Mokoena opened the scoring inside seven minutes with a crisp volley from the edge of the area after a partial clearance.

Moments later, Tashreeq Matthews doubled the advantage, rising between defenders to head home a precise delivery from Nuno Santos, whose creative influence proved decisive throughout the encounter.

Matthews soon added his second, finishing off a well-worked move after Brayan Leon broke clear and squared for a simple tap-in.

The Brazilians’ attacking cohesion overwhelmed Siwelele early, and their grip tightened further when Nyiko Mobbie inadvertently turned the ball into his own net under pressure, extending the lead to 4-0 within 24 minutes.

Despite entering the match with one of the league’s most disciplined defences, Siwelele found themselves exposed repeatedly. However, they showed resilience before the half-hour mark when Ghampani Lungu finished from close range after capitalising on a defensive lapse, reducing the deficit to 4-1.

Yet Sundowns’ attacking machine remained relentless. Leon added a fifth before the break following intricate link-up play involving Santos and Kutlwano Letlhaku, ensuring the hosts maintained firm control heading into half-time.

The second half followed a similar pattern of end-to-end action. Leon continued his outstanding display by heading home Santos’ cross before completing his hat-trick from close range after a rebound off the crossbar. His clinical finishing underlined a remarkable return since joining the club, further enhancing Sundowns’ attacking depth.

Siwelele refused to capitulate entirely. Lungu grabbed his second after combining effectively with Siphesihle Jeza, while Relebogile Mokhuoane struck from distance to keep the scoreline competitive.

Lungu later completed his own hat-trick from the penalty spot, capping an extraordinary individual performance despite his side’s defensive struggles.

Even so, Sundowns’ firepower proved decisive. The victory lifts them six points clear at the summit, though they have played two matches more than second-placed Orlando Pirates. With a final fixture against TS Galaxy looming, the title race remains delicately poised.
