Mamelodi Sundowns have formally approached the Confederation of African Football to request a change in schedule for the first leg of their CAF Champions League final against AS FAR.

The opening leg, initially set for Friday, May 15 in Pretoria, has been proposed to be moved to Sunday, May 17, with a 15:00 kickoff at Loftus Versfeld Stadium. The South African champions are keen on the adjustment primarily due to concerns over fan attendance.

Club officials are wary that a Friday evening fixture could significantly affect turnout, as many supporters may struggle to attend because of work commitments and weekday travel limitations. A weekend afternoon slot is viewed as a more favourable option to draw a larger crowd and generate a stronger home atmosphere for such a crucial encounter.

Complicating matters further is the availability of the venue. Loftus Versfeld is already scheduled to host a rugby fixture involving the Blue Bulls on Saturday, ruling out the possibility of a simple one-day postponement. This clash in scheduling has reportedly influenced Sundowns’ preference for a Sunday kickoff.

Meanwhile, AS FAR are also said to have reservations, particularly regarding the proposed 15:00 start time in Pretoria. Concerns have been raised about the potential impact of warmer afternoon conditions, which could offer the hosts an advantage given their familiarity with the environment.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding the first leg, the return fixture remains fixed for May 24 at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Sports Complex in Rabat.

CAF is currently reviewing the request and is expected to weigh several key factors before reaching a decision. These include sporting integrity, broadcasting commitments, stadium logistics, travel arrangements, and security considerations.

Beyond the prestige of lifting the trophy, the stakes are significantly higher for both sides. The winner of this edition will secure qualification to the FIFA Intercontinental Cup, the FIFA Club World Cup, and the CAF Super Cup.

Both clubs have a rich history in the competition, though success has been long overdue. AS FAR last lifted the title in 1985, while Mamelodi Sundowns were crowned champions in 2016, setting the stage for a highly anticipated final showdown.
