Cassius Mailula set for Sundowns return

Mamelodi Sundowns are reportedly interested in bringing former striker Cassius Mailula back to the club following his departure from Major League Soccer side Toronto FC.

Mailula recently became a free agent after Toronto FC opted not to renew his contract, making the South African forward one of the most sought-after players on the local transfer market ahead of the new Betway Premiership season.

The 24-year-old has already attracted interest from several clubs, with Kaizer Chiefs also believed to be monitoring his situation as they look to strengthen their attacking options.

Mailula left Sundowns three seasons ago after an outstanding breakthrough campaign that established him as one of South Africa’s brightest attacking talents. However, his move to the United States failed to unfold as expected.

The forward struggled to cement a regular place at Toronto FC and was sent out on two separate loan spells in an attempt to revive his career.

His first temporary move took him to Moroccan giants Wydad Casablanca before he spent the latter part of last season with Belgian side KV Kortrijk. Despite those opportunities, Mailula was unable to make the desired impact, leading Toronto FC to release him at the end of his contract.

With Mailula now available on a free transfer, Sundowns are reportedly considering a reunion with the academy graduate as they reshape their squad for the upcoming campaign.

The Brazilians recently parted ways with veteran Namibian striker Peter Shalulile, creating space in their attacking department and opening the door for a potential return for Mailula.

Having already proven himself in Sundowns’ system, Mailula could provide familiarity, pace and versatility to the club’s frontline as they prepare for another demanding domestic and continental campaign.

Although no formal agreement has been reached, Sundowns’ interest is expected to intensify in the coming weeks, with the club facing competition from Kaizer Chiefs and potentially other Betway Premiership sides for the signature of one of South Africa’s most talented free agents.
