Mamelodi Sundowns consider move for Golden Arrows striker Junior Dion

Mamelodi Sundowns are reportedly considering a move for Golden Arrows striker Junior Dion, the forward who scored in both legs of their MTN8 semi-final and helped push the reigning CAF Champions League holders to the limit.

The Chloorkop-based club have identified Dion as a potential target before the transfer window closes on 22 September, according to a source close to Sundowns.

“There is interest from Mamelodi Sundowns. There is conversation taking place,” the source said.

Dion was on target in both matches as Sundowns eventually overcame Golden Arrows 3-2 in the second leg in Durban on Sunday. Sundowns progressed to their first final of the season by winning on the away goals rule, having lost the opening leg 1-0 at home.

The result has set up a high-profile cup final against Orlando Pirates on 10 October.

For Dion, the semi-final goals continued his strong record against Miguel Cardoso’s side. The Arrows striker has repeatedly found the net against Sundowns, and his performances over the two legs appear to have attracted the attention of the PSL’s record title winners.

Sundowns face a demanding period across domestic, continental and global competitions, and the club are understood to be assessing whether Dion could strengthen their attacking options before the end of the current transfer window.

The Brazilians already have Cassius Mailula, Brayan Leon, Iqraam Rayners and Lebo Mothiba available as attacking options. The possible arrival of Dion would give the club another forward capable of contributing goals as they prepare for a congested schedule.

Sundowns have already recruited from Golden Arrows ahead of the new season, signing Siyanda Ndlovu. Ndlovu was reportedly on his way to Johannesburg to undergo a medical with Orlando Pirates before later resurfacing at Chloorkop, where he completed a move to Sundowns.

Dion’s future has also recently been linked to questions surrounding changes to his registration “ticket”, while his continued scoring form has placed him among players being discussed in relation to the PSL Golden Boot award. Those developments have added to the growing interest in the striker as the transfer deadline approaches.

Sundowns’ pursuit of Dion, if completed, would see the club attempt to bring in a player who has just caused them significant problems in one of the season’s major cup ties. Their semi-final victory ensured a meeting with Orlando Pirates in the MTN8 final, but Dion’s two goals across the contest have made him a possible target for the team he helped unsettle.
