Miguel Cardoso warns against complacency despite Sundowns’ winning run
Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso is urging caution despite his team’s emphatic 4-1 victory over Chippa United in the South African Premier Division.
The reigning champions extended their winning run to nine consecutive league matches, moving two points clear at the top of the table with 53 points as they chase a ninth successive title.
Goals from Marcelo Allende, Iqraam Rayners, Tashreeq Matthews and Brayan Leon secured a commanding win over the Chilli Boys.
Despite the momentum, Cardoso is warning his squad against complacency. “It’s very important but it’s not enough, we have to look ahead and keep racking up points because if we rest on our laurels, we certainly won’t get where we want to go,” he said.
The Sundowns coach stressed the importance of focusing on each game individually rather than dwelling on goal differences.
“For the next match, let’s try to go to Durban and do the same job we’ve been doing, without worrying about the number of goals scored, let’s not even think about it because that would put us in a situation that won’t bring us anything,” he added.
Cardoso emphasised the need to maintain consistency, highlighting a packed schedule ahead. “We cannot let up, we have to think about the next match and, of course, if we want to be champions, we will have to continue this great winning streak in the remaining matches.
There won’t be room for many dropped points, which is why we need to focus on the next match.”
Sundowns now turn their attention to Durban City, with a crucial league clash scheduled at Chatsworth Stadium on Tuesday, April 7.
Cardoso is determined his team maintain their form before the upcoming CAF Champions League fixtures. “Let’s focus on the match in Durban, then we’ll have to play the Champions League and then come back to the series of league matches.
There’s no room to drop many points, so we absolutely have to rack up even more points in this series,” he said.
