Mali honour Mamadou Sangaré after outstanding debut season in France
Malian midfielder Mamadou Sangaré was named Malian Player of the Year at the third edition of the Mali Football Awards held in Bamako, capping an outstanding debut season in French football with RC Lens.
The 23-year-old earned the prestigious honour after a campaign in which he established himself as one of the standout African players in Ligue 1.
Sangaré played a major role in Lens’ successful season, helping the club win the Coupe de France and secure qualification for the UEFA Champions League after finishing second in the league behind Paris Saint-Germain.
In his first season in France’s top division, the Malian international made 37 appearances in all competitions, scoring three goals and providing four assists.
His performances in midfield drew widespread praise throughout the season and further strengthened his growing reputation in European football.
Sangaré’s impressive campaign was also recognised beyond Mali, as he claimed the Marc-Vivien Foé Trophy, awarded to the best African player in France’s Ligue 1.
The award added another major achievement to a season that marked an important step forward in his career.
The former RB Leipzig player also impressed on the international stage during the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, where he delivered several strong performances for the Malian national team.
His consistency, energy and influence in midfield have made him one of the leading figures of Mali’s current generation of players. At just 23 years old, Sangaré is increasingly viewed as a key part of the country’s ambitions for future continental success.
Following his award win in Bamako, the midfielder reiterated his desire to help Mali reach the top level of African football in the years ahead.
The Mali Football Awards ceremony once again celebrated some of the country’s top footballing talents, but Sangaré’s breakthrough season and rapid rise in France ensured he emerged as one of the standout names of the evening.
