Malick Fofana transfer: Sunderland weigh Premier League approach for Lyon attacker
Belgian-Guinean winger Malick Fofana is the subject of a rumoured move from Lyon to Sunderland, with the Premier League club linked with a deal for the 21-year-old.
Fofana, who plays on the left wing and is right-footed, has started the 2026-27 campaign with two Ligue 1 appearances and one goal, while also featuring four times in Champions League qualifying and scoring once.
He joined Lyon from Belgian club KAA Gent in January 2024 in a deal worth €19.5m. His current market value is listed at €30m, giving the French club a potentially significant decision to make if Sunderland pursue the move.
Fofana was born in Aalst and holds Belgian and Guinean nationality. He remains under contract with Lyon until 30 June 2028, meaning any transfer would require an agreement between the clubs rather than allowing him to leave as a free agent.
Lyon are competing in Ligue 1, while Sunderland are preparing for life in the Premier League. Fofana’s involvement in both domestic and European qualifying matches has come early in the new season, although he has played a larger share of Lyon’s minutes in the Champions League qualifiers than in the league.
The rumour remains unconfirmed, with Fofana currently a Lyon player and contracted to the club for two more seasons beyond the current campaign.
