Malian midfielder Hamidou Makalou has shed light on his decision to sign with Stade Brestois despite interest from several European clubs, including RB Salzburg, Olympique de Marseille, Chelsea, and Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The 18-year-old, a product of the renowned Jean-Marc Guillou Academy, was widely expected to join RB Salzburg due to the club’s strong ties with the academy.
However, after careful consideration, Makalou ultimately chose Stade Brestois, where he was recently handed his debut by manager Éric Roy in a Ligue 1 clash against Reims on March 17.
In an interview with Africafoot, the Bamako-born player detailed the factors that influenced his decision, emphasizing the club’s ambition and structured environment.
“I would first like to express my deep gratitude to everyone who welcomed and advised me throughout this process.
Stade Brestois is an ambitious club with a well-defined game plan that aligns with my development goals,” Makalou said.
“During my visit, I was impressed not only by the club’s facilities but also by the management’s vision.
Their structured approach and their determination to compete in European competitions convinced me that this was the right place for me. I took all these factors into account before making my decision.”
Sought After by Top European Clubs
Makalou has been a highly sought-after prospect in recent months, attracting interest from multiple European teams. Sparta Prague, Wolverhampton Wanderers, and Chelsea were among the clubs eager to secure his signature.
While he refrained from disclosing specific details about the negotiations, the defensive midfielder acknowledged the strong demand for his services.
“It’s true that several clubs showed interest in me, which is a testament to the quality of training at the Jean-Marc Guillou Academy. It is one of the best academies in Africa,” he stated.
“However, I always left the administrative matters to my representatives so I could focus on what I do best—playing football and enjoying the game.”
Pride in Making First-Team Debut
Makalou recently made his professional debut for Stade Brestois at the Francis-Le Blé Stadium, an experience he described as unforgettable despite the team failing to secure a victory against Reims.
“It’s an incredible feeling that will stay with me forever. Wearing this jersey for the first time in a competitive match filled me with immense pride.
The atmosphere was fantastic, even though we couldn’t get the win. I truly enjoyed my first experience on the pitch,” he reflected.
With his talent and composure, Makalou is expected to play a key role in Brest’s midfield as they continue their campaign.
His decision to join the club, prioritizing long-term development over immediate prestige, signals a calculated approach to his career trajectory
Brest supporters will now look forward to seeing the young Malian establish himself as an integral part of their squad in the seasons ahead.
