Malang Sarr signals readiness for Senegal call-up but urges patience

Malang Sarr has reaffirmed his ambition to represent Senegal at international level, stating he is prepared to answer the call if selected but recognises the fierce competition for places in the Lions’ defence.

The 26-year-old centre-back, who has rediscovered his form with RC Lens this season, made his position clear during a press conference on Friday.

After a difficult spell following his move from OGC Nice to Chelsea in 2020 – a journey that included loan stints at FC Porto and AS Monaco – Sarr has re-established himself as a reliable figure at club level.

Now a regular starter for Lens, the defender has strung together a series of commanding performances for the Sang-et-Or and is once again attracting attention beyond Ligue 1.

In front of reporters, Sarr spoke candidly about his hopes of wearing the Senegal shirt.

I said it was a goal a few months ago, and it remains the same. I also said it would come through my performances. I have to continue like this, and if the selection comes, it will be a great joy for me. I will continue to work and show that I have the ability to be there, he said.

Despite his impressive form, Sarr admitted there has been no formal approach from Senegal’s football authorities.

No contact at this time, he revealed, before stressing that he intends to let events unfold naturally. I’m letting things happen, I’m quite patient. We know how the calls and selections are made, there’s a process to follow. I’ll be ready once I’m on the pre-list or the list. I’m not too worried about that for the moment but I’ll be ready at the right time.

Sarr’s comments underline both his ambition and his measured approach.

Senegal’s defensive ranks remain well stocked, with several established names competing for the same positions, which makes breaking into the squad a challenge even for in-form players.

For now, Sarr is focusing on maintaining his momentum at Lens, knowing consistent displays will strengthen his case.

The former France youth international’s public remarks also highlight a turning point in his career.

From a promising teenager at Nice to a player seeking stability after his Chelsea move, Sarr’s resurgence at Lens appears to have reignited his international aspirations.

Whether or not the call comes soon, his message to Senegal was clear: he is ready, patient and determined to earn his place among the Lions.
