Makhehlene Makhaula weighs retirement as Orlando Pirates edge closer to league glory
Makhehlene Makhaula’s decorated stint at Orlando Pirates may be approaching its final chapter, with the experienced midfielder openly suggesting he could bring down the curtain on his career should the Buccaneers complete their push for the league title this season.
The 36-year-old, who joined the Soweto giants in 2023, has already collected five trophies with the club, but a league crown remains the missing piece in his personal collection.
With Pirates within touching distance of the championship, the veteran has hinted that the ultimate triumph could serve as the perfect farewell to professional football.
Makhaula’s influence in the Pirates midfield has grown significantly in recent months, particularly after Sihle Ndluli’s injury late last year opened the door for increased game time.
Under head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou, the veteran has re-established himself as a reliable presence, offering experience and stability in a squad chasing multiple honours.
His competitive edge in training has also stood out, with younger players pushing him to maintain high standards daily.
“I think the young guys always want to challenge me each and every time, even during training. When I try to take things easy, they always come hard at me,” Makhaula said.
“His resurgence has been vital as Pirates close in on the title, with the squad needing only a win from their remaining fixtures to be crowned champions. A potential farewell now looms large for the veteran midfielder.
With Orlando Pirates on the brink of league title, attention has shifted to Makhaula’s future as he considers ending his career on a high. Now approaching his 37th birthday, the experienced campaigner believes a championship win would be a fitting conclusion to a journey defined by perseverance and silverware at domestic level.
“Only God knows. I’m always praying because my wish is the league. We will see, maybe this season it can happen,” he said. It leaves the Buccaneers needing one victory from remaining fixtures to claim champions.
“It would be a dream come true. When you go to other teams, they don’t even try to fight for the league, but with big teams you must always compete for trophies. Big teams are always fighting for something,”
Should Pirates complete the job, retirement could follow immediately.
