Makhanya strengthens Bafana Bafana defence as Mbokazi returns to fitness

Olwethu Makhanya’s assured first full appearance for Bafana Bafana, combined with Mbekezeli Mbokazi’s return from injury, has given coach Pitso Mosimane a timely boost in central defence.

Makhanya started alongside Ime Okon at centre-back as Bafana Bafana beat Guinea 2-1 at the Orlando Amstel Arena on Saturday afternoon. The defender looked composed throughout, making a number of well-timed tackles while showing strong tactical awareness.

The match was Makhanya’s first full appearance for the national team after he had previously made his debut in a pre-World Cup friendly against Panama earlier this year.

His opportunity came after his pre-season move to Scottish giants Glasgow Rangers, and Mosimane believes the defender should now be considered ready for international football.

“I am happy that Makhanya played, and we can see his quality,” Mosimane said. “He’s a big boy. If he’s playing for Glasgow Rangers, he belongs on the pitch here as well. So, it’s good.”

Makhanya’s performance came as Mbokazi continued his recovery from injury. Mbokazi had formed a strong centre-back partnership with Okon during the World Cup and would probably have started at his former home ground against Guinea had he been fit enough to join the squad.

The defender completed his return to competitive action for MLS side Chicago Fire on Sunday morning. He showed no signs of rust and made an important goal-line clearance during their victory over Charlotte FC.

Mbokazi’s return gives Mosimane greater defensive depth ahead of the FIFA international window in November. The Bafana Bafana coach is keen to have both defenders available for selection, increasing his options in the centre of the defence.

“Ime and Makhanya did exceptionally well,” Mosimane added. “I am happy for Makhanya to get his start. He hasn’t had as many opportunities because Mbokazi has been playing, but that’s healthy competition. Let’s create those opportunities.”

Makhanya and Okon are expected to retain their places in central defence when Bafana Bafana face Eritrea in Cairo on Wednesday night.

A further convincing display from the pair could make Mbokazi’s return to the starting line-up more difficult, despite his established partnership with Okon and his successful comeback for Chicago Fire.
