Makélélé urges Chelsea to add experience to compete in Champions League

Former Chelsea star Claude Makélélé has backed the club to make a strong return to the UEFA Champions League next season, stressing the importance of bringing in experienced reinforcements during the summer transfer window.

Makélélé, who is of Congolese descent and was a key part of Chelsea’s midfield during their early 2000s resurgence, believes the current squad has taken significant strides under manager Enzo Maresca but must be strengthened if it is to compete at the highest level in Europe.

The Blues capped off a turbulent domestic campaign with a fourth-place finish in the Premier League and a commanding 4-1 victory over Real Betis in the UEFA Conference League final.

Despite inconsistencies earlier in the season, Chelsea showed clear progress in the final weeks, securing their return to Europe’s elite competition and lifting their first trophy in four years.

“In the beginning, Maresca received a lot of criticism,” Makélélé told Metro. “But every coach needs time. Chelsea has gone through many changes and needed stability with both players and staff.”

Makélélé credited Maresca for instilling a clear tactical identity and consistency, which he believes laid the foundation for recent success. “He stuck with a system and a consistent group, and now we’re seeing the benefits.

The fans are starting to believe again,” he added. “He’s led the team to the Champions League and won a trophy. That’s an excellent achievement.”

However, the former midfielder warned that maintaining momentum will require wise recruitment.

“Stability is key, but they also need players with the right mentality and understanding of the club’s history. Don’t change too much, but get players who are ready for the challenge.”

Makélélé concluded by noting that a deeper and more experienced squad will be essential if Chelsea hopes to sustain challenges across multiple competitions next season.
