Claude Makelele has expressed his delight at Manchester City midfielder Rodri winning the Ballon d’Or, describing the award as long-overdue recognition for the importance of the defensive midfield role.
Makelele, who was born in Kinshasa, Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of the Congo), is widely credited with redefining that position during his successful spells at Real Madrid and Chelsea.
“Finally, finally some recognition,” the former France international said in an interview with the BBC.
“That position is very important in football. Not the number 10s, not the wingers, not the centre forward: the players in that position are the key to football.”
Rodri claimed the Ballon d’Or after an outstanding season that saw him lead Manchester City to a historic treble, including their first-ever Champions League title.
Makelele, who himself was rarely in the spotlight during his playing days, views the award as a milestone in how football values the contributions of players in his former role.
Makelele also spoke about his time under José Mourinho, who signed him for Chelsea.
He described the current Fenerbahce coach as a father figure but also a disciplinarian.
“He was like a father with a strong character, but also like a dictator. I think he needed to be like that because he had young talents at Chelsea who needed discipline.
“Mourinho realised that he could get a lot out of the group. He knew he would lead the team to success because he saw their character.”
