Former Chelsea midfielder Claude Makelele has thrown his weight behind the club’s pursuit of AC Milan and France goalkeeper Mike Maignan, describing the move as essential for the Blues’ ambitions.
Makelele, who has Congolese roots, told BBC Sport that Chelsea’s interest in Maignan makes complete sense given the current state of the squad and the demands of competing for major honours across Europe and domestically.
“Maignan is currently one of the best goalkeepers in the world,” Makelele said. “I imagine Milan do not want to lose their goalkeeper, but if Chelsea could bring him to London it would be a huge reinforcement, because to win trophies you need a reliable goalkeeper.”
Chelsea made an attempt to sign the 29-year-old before the Club World Cup transfer window deadline last Tuesday but were unable to reach an agreement with Milan.
However, the club is expected to return with a renewed offer after the tournament.
Maignan has just over a year remaining on his contract, a factor that could influence Milan’s decision, especially amid financial constraints and the need to avoid losing him for free next summer.
Makelele, who won two Premier League titles with Chelsea, believes that strengthening the goalkeeping position is only part of the equation if the Blues are to become serious contenders again.
“Chelsea need a goalkeeper, a striker and possibly a winger to be able to seriously compete in both the Champions League and the Premier League next season,” he added.
Chelsea finished fourth in the 2024/25 Premier League season under manager Enzo Maresca and are looking to bolster key areas in the squad before the new campaign.
Maignan, who has been a consistent performer for Milan and France, is viewed as a top target.
