Algeria captain Riyad Mahrez says he feels a special sense of belonging as his team prepares for their opening match of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations against Sudan, hosted in neighbouring Morocco.
Speaking ahead of the North Africans’ first group game, the former Manchester City winger praised the warm reception his team has received since arriving in the host country.
“We were warmly welcomed by the Moroccans, we are extremely happy to be here in this neighbouring country,” Mahrez said.
For the 34-year-old, the tournament carries personal significance beyond football. Mahrez revealed that his family background deepens his emotional connection to the host nation.
“Having an Algerian father and a Moroccan mother adds a special touch to the matter,” he noted, highlighting the close cultural and historical ties between the two countries.
Algeria, champions in 2019, will be hoping to make a strong start against Sudan as they look to reassert themselves on the continental stage after recent disappointments.
With Mahrez leading both on and off the pitch, the Desert Foxes will be aiming to turn familiarity and goodwill into momentum when they kick off their tournament at 15:00 GMT.
