Maghnes Akliouche has ignited speculation in Algeria following his recent comments about his international career.
The AS Monaco playmaker, who has been a key figure for the Ligue 1 club, remains undecided on whether he will represent France or Algeria at senior level.
The 23-year-old, who played a crucial role in Monaco’s 3-0 victory over Stade de Reims last Friday by providing an assist, has long been a subject of interest for Algerian football authorities.
His performances this season, which include five goals and eight assists in 33 appearances, have only intensified the debate over his future.
A rising star torn between two nations
Akliouche has represented France at youth level, featuring in various age groups and winning a silver medal at the Olympic Games last year.
Despite his success with the French youth setup, he has yet to receive a senior call-up from Didier Deschamps, who recently excluded him and Lyon’s Rayan Cherki from his plans in mid-February.
With France seemingly looking elsewhere, Algeria has ramped up its pursuit of the Tremblay-en-France-born midfielder.
The Algerian Football Federation (FAF) has been monitoring his progress for some time, hoping to convince him to switch allegiance to the Desert Foxes.
Akliouche keeps his options open
When asked about his international future in an interview with Téléfoot, Akliouche remained cautious, neither committing to France nor ruling out a potential switch to Algeria.
“I played in all the youth categories for France. I had some important moments at the Olympic Games, and we managed to bring home a medal. But for now, my focus is on giving my best for Monaco. As for the future, we will see.
His remarks have been widely interpreted as a possible opening to Algeria, fueling optimism among supporters and football officials in the North African country.
« J’ai fait toutes les catégories de jeunes en équipe de France (…) pour la suite, on verra. »

Many see this as a signal that he is seriously considering joining the Algerian national team, particularly after being overlooked by Deschamps.
What’s next for Akliouche?
With Algeria eager to strengthen its squad ahead of AFCON 2025 and the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, the Monaco playmaker could be a valuable addition.
The decision now rests in his hands, but given his rapid rise in Ligue 1, both nations will be watching closely.
For now, Akliouche remains focused on his club, but the speculation surrounding his international career is unlikely to fade anytime soon.
