Maghnes Akliouche has explained his reasons for choosing to represent France at international level, describing the decision as a natural progression despite his deep respect for Algeria, his parents’ homeland.

The AS Monaco midfielder was handed his first call-up to the French national team on Thursday, an achievement he described as a proud moment in his career. “Honestly, I’m very proud. It’s a nice surprise for me,” Akliouche told Get French Football News, reflecting on the milestone.

Akliouche, who has impressed with his performances in Ligue 1, was also eligible to play for Algeria. However, after years of representing France at youth level and featuring for the national side at the Olympic Games, the 22-year-old felt the decision to commit to Les Bleus was a logical conclusion to his journey.

“I have a deep respect for Algeria,” he said, acknowledging the emotional pull of his family’s heritage. “But I’ve always been part of the French youth teams, as well as at the Olympic Games. Representing France was a logical next step. It was a natural decision.”

The midfielder’s comments shed light on the difficult choices faced by many players with dual nationalities, particularly those with ties to African nations. Akliouche emphasised that his decision was not a rejection of Algeria but a continuation of the pathway he had followed since his early career.

His international call-up reflects the growing recognition of his talent. Akliouche has become a key figure for Monaco this season, catching the attention of France head coach Didier Deschamps, who rewarded his consistent performances with a place in the senior squad.

While Akliouche’s decision may come as a disappointment to Algerian supporters who had hoped to see him in the Desert Foxes’ colours, his words highlighted a deep appreciation for his roots. His acknowledgement of Algeria’s significance demonstrated that the choice was far from simple, even if the outcome felt inevitable.

Dual-nationality players often face scrutiny over such decisions, but Akliouche made clear that his commitment to France is a reflection of his career path rather than a dismissal of his heritage.

“It was a logical conclusion,” he reiterated, underlining his pride in receiving the opportunity to represent the reigning world champions.

As he prepares for his first involvement with the French national team, Akliouche will aim to make an immediate impact and justify the faith shown in him.

For the Monaco midfielder, this step represents not only personal achievement but also the culmination of years of dedication at youth levels, where he established himself as one of France’s brightest prospects.

The announcement of his call-up has been met with excitement in France, where supporters are eager to see the attacking midfielder bring his creativity and vision to the senior squad.

Meanwhile, Algeria will undoubtedly keep a close watch on his progress, recognising the quality of a player who could have worn their colours.
