Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas compares Franco-Algerian talent Rayan Cherki to Lionel Messi

Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas has likened Franco-Algerian talent Rayan Cherki to Argentina legend Lionel Messi.

Cherki has been a standout performer for Lyon in the ongoing campaign, contributing 30 goals across competitions for the club. Out of 40 matches, the talented attacker has racked up 12 goals and delivered 18 assists for the French Giants.

The 21-year-old shone for Lyon during the Europa League quarterfinals clash against Manchester United.

Despite Lyon’s elimination from the Europa League, Cherki leads the assist charts with eight.

“Rayan has a talent comparable to (Lionel) Messi in terms of technique,” said former Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas.

The enterprising winger has emerged as a top transfer target for several clubs due to his outstanding performance for his side.

Despite huge interest, Cherki’s current contract with Lyon is expected to expire in the summer of 2026.
