Mehdi Zeffane Weighs Future Amid Uncertainty at Lyon
Algerian international Mehdi Zeffane is seeking clarity on his future at Olympique Lyonnais, as he enters what he considers a crucial stage in his career. Often used as a backup to first-choice right-back Christophe Jallet, the 23-year-old defender is hoping to resolve his situation before the start of the new season.
In an interview with Le Progrès, Zeffane admitted that while he is open to staying at Lyon — his boyhood club — the lack of consistent playing time has left him considering a move elsewhere. With Champions League football on the horizon, the defender acknowledged the potential for more opportunities, but he’s also tempted by regular minutes elsewhere in Ligue 1.
“Before I left for the national team, everyone at Lyon assured me they wanted to keep me, and a contract extension was mentioned,” Zeffane said. “They see me as Christophe Jallet’s backup, and with more matches this season, that’s something I have to consider. OL is my training club, and it’s a big club, but I’m at a key point in my career.”
Several Ligue 1 clubs, including SC Bastia, Ajaccio, and Montpellier, have shown interest in acquiring Zeffane, either on loan or in a permanent deal. According to L’Équipe, Bastia are particularly keen to secure the Algerian full-back’s services.
“When a Ligue 1 club offers you regular playing time, it’s something you have to think about,” he added. “I’d like to know what’s ahead before I return.”
Zeffane, who made his debut with the Algerian national team in 2014, is eager to play more regularly as he looks to cement his place in both club and country setups. Whether that future lies in Lyon or elsewhere remains to be seen — but a decision is expected soon.
