Steed Malbranque Signs New Two-Year Deal with Olympique Lyonnais
Steed Malbranque has ended speculation over a possible move to Evian Thonon Gaillard by agreeing to extend his contract with Olympique Lyonnais. The 34-year-old midfielder has committed to stay at his formative club until 2016.
Lyon confirmed the extension in a statement released on Wednesday: “Olympique Lyonnais informs that Steed Malbranque has extended his contract with the club for two seasons, following a meeting with club president Jean-Michel Aulas and head coach Hubert Fournier.”
Malbranque, who was widely expected to depart this summer, expressed his satisfaction with the decision on the club’s official website. “I really wanted to continue the adventure with my training club,” he said. “I had the opportunity to extend my contract and I’m very happy to have done so.”
He also reflected on his discussions with Lyon’s management, particularly with Fournier, whom he knows well from his earlier playing days at the club. “I met Hubert Fournier, whom I already knew from having played with him for two years at Lyon when I was younger. We chatted a lot. We knew each other a little bit, so it’s easier.”
Malbranque’s commitment is a boost for Lyon as they prepare for the new season, providing experience and leadership in midfield. His decision to remain with the club highlights his loyalty and desire to contribute to Lyon’s ambitions going forward.
