Olympique Lyonnais' Rayan Cherki faces uncertain future amid contract extension condition

Lyon captain Alexandre Lacazette has thrown his weight behind Franco-Algerian talent Rayan Cherki to reach the level of former Real Madrid and Arsenal star Mesut Özil.

Cherki has been a standout performer for Lyon in the ongoing campaign, contributing 30 goals across competitions for the club. Out of 40 matches, the talented attacker has racked up 12 goals and delivered 18 assists for the French Giants.

The 21-year-old shone for Lyon during the Europa League quarterfinals clash against Manchester United.

Despite Lyon’s elimination from the Europa League, Cherki leads the assist charts with eight.

“Rayan, in everyday life, is a bit special, different and on the pitch, you see that too. This season, he has managed to raise his level,” began the Lyon captain, who is also set to leave Lyon upon the conclusion of the campaign.

“I would put Özil in a different category but, with time, Rayan can get close to him.” Former Real Madrid and Arsenal midfielder Özil won the FIFA World Cup back in 2014 and made over 200 assists over the span of his career.

The enterprising winger has emerged as a top transfer target for several clubs due to his outstanding performance for his side.

Despite huge interest, Cherki’s current contract with Lyon is expected to expire in the summer of 2026.
