Luca Zidane shines as Granada advances in Copa del Rey
Luca Zidane, son of football legend Zinedine Zidane, delivered a standout performance on Tuesday, leading Granada to a dramatic victory over Real Zaragoza in the second round of the Copa del Rey.
The 26-year-old goalkeeper showcased his skill by saving a penalty during regulation time and another in the decisive shootout, even stepping up to score a penalty himself.
The tense encounter ended 2-2 after regular time, pushing the match to penalties.
Zidane played a pivotal role in Granada’s success, converting the team’s third penalty in the shootout before denying Zaragoza’s Enrique Clemente with a spectacular save.
The final miss by Zaragoza’s Aitor Manas sealed Granada’s 5-4 shootout triumph, sending the Andalusian club to the tournament’s next round.
Earlier in the game, Zidane had already proven his worth by stopping a crucial penalty from Alberto Mari in the 28th minute, keeping Granada in contention after falling behind 1-0.
The save spurred a quick response from his team, with goals from Shon Weissman in the 42nd minute and an own goal by Zaragoza’s Enrique Clemente in the 45th, giving Granada a 2-1 lead.
However, Zaragoza’s Adu Ares equalized in stoppage time, setting the stage for the thrilling shootout.
Speaking to the club’s media after the game, Zidane reflected on the hard-fought victory: “It was a complicated match. Both teams wanted to qualify, understandably. We’re happy to have won and advanced. That’s the most important thing.”
Having joined Granada this summer from Eibar, Zidane has played primarily in a backup role but seized his opportunity to shine in the cup competition.
His heroics on Tuesday not only ensured Granada’s progression but also solidified his status as a key player in crucial moments.
Granada will now look ahead to the third round, with fans and teammates alike hoping for more moments of brilliance from their dynamic goalkeeper.
